Short answer: Barbri is worth it if you'll use what the price buys:
- a study schedule set for you;
- lectures;
- personalized feedback on your written work;
- a free retake as insurance;
- and especially if a firm pays.
It's hard to justify $2,399 (Premium) or $3,399 (Elite) if you can keep your own schedule, if you're retaking and have already watched the lectures, or if what you actually need is more practice in the NextGen formats. The cheaper routes below run from $99 to $1,895.
Prices, inclusions and terms below were read on Barbri's own pages on October 22, 2026.
What Barbri Premium buys for $2,399
Barbri's 2027 self-pay page lists Premium at $2,399 (list $2,999). It includes:
- 1,000+ NCBE-licensed MBE questions, or NextGen question sets
- simulated practice tests and Barbri's Pass Predictor
- an adaptive study plan with a customizable calendar, including half days
- personalized feedback on NextGen written assignments, or unlimited essay feedback for legacy exams
- 20-to-30-minute lectures and animated video lessons
- print and digital course materials
- 4+ months of course access
For NextGen specifically, Barbri says three NCBE-licensed NextGen question sets are built into the course, plus one full NCBE question set on the official exam platform so you see the real interface before exam day.
Premium or Elite: is the extra $1,000 worth it?
Elite is $3,399 (list $3,999), $1,000 more than Premium, and adds four supplements. Premium students can add each one later at a Barbri student price:
| Elite adds | Regular price | Added to Premium |
|---|---|---|
| AdaptiBar MCQ Simulator | $495 | $395 |
| AdaptiBar Writing Guide | $295 | $249 |
| CriticalPass cards (NextGen deck) | $295 | $195 |
| Quimbee SideBar videos | $395 | $295 |
Barbri lists the Writing Guide as UBE-only for now ("NextGen coming"). So the math is:
- All four as add-ons: $1,134. Elite saves you $134, but only if you want every one.
- The three that cover NextGen today: $885. That's $115 less than upgrading to Elite.
- Just the one for your weak spot: $195 to $395. This is usually the cheapest answer.
The free retake is part of the price
Barbri sells a free repeat rather than a refund. Premium and Elite students who don't pass get one free Premium retake in the same jurisdiction the next time the course is offered, without paying more tuition. Supplements (AdaptiBar, CriticalPass, Quimbee SideBar) are excluded, and new hard-copy books need a $250 refundable deposit plus shipping.
For a first-time taker, that's real insurance. The competitors offer it too: Themis, Kaplan and Helix each give one free repeat on their own conditions, compared in the repeat-taker guide.
Who Barbri is worth it for
- Your firm pays. Take it, follow the calendar, and add a NextGen-format bank only if the practice runs short.
- You need someone else to set the schedule. The adaptive plan and progress tracking are what the money mostly buys.
- You want human feedback on your writing and will actually submit it. On NextGen, integrated question sets (21%) and performance tasks (30%) carry just over half the score.
- You're a first-time taker who wants the free retake as insurance.
Who it isn't worth it for
- Self-starters. If you kept your own outlines in law school, you're paying mostly for structure you don't need.
- Retakers who already watched the lectures. Unless your free retake covers you, a second full price buys the same lectures again. What a retake needs is diagnosis and format practice.
- Anyone whose only gap is NextGen format practice. That doesn't need a full course: NCBE sells its six official practice sets for $325, and dedicated banks cost $99 to $495.
- Working candidates who need a longer runway. Premium gives 4+ months of access. Barbri's Extended U.S. Bar Prep runs 6 or 10 months for part-time J.D., LL.M. and internationally trained candidates, but costs $4,599 to $4,799 on sale (list $5,999).
